If you liked Warcraft ][ but wanted to be more involved with the action then Diablo is for you. In Diablo you control one of three character types: a warrior is your basic fighter, a Rogue is your mix between a warrior and a thief, and a sorcerer who is a magic user. Once you have picked your character you can then venture into town or into one of the many labyrinths, were you will find your fortune or die in trying.
The premise of Diablo is the age old story of a small kingdom, Khandaras, falling under the influence of a lunatic king (in this case has turned into a skeleton king), and an Archbishop with delusions of Grandeur. As many times as we have heard this story, it doesn't really matter, Blizzard has done a wonderful job turning it into something that is interesting to play. The first weekend I played it, I spent about eight hours bringing my character up to 13th level, much to my girlfriends chagrin. One of the things that I liked about warcraft was the quirky sounds, Blizzard did a great job of translating that to the Diablo. Additionally the graphics engine is superb, even on network play with four people across a busy corporate intranet, the game behaved admirably.
Diablo is a turn based gaming system were you have a third person view on all of the action and the surrounding area. This is a definite departure from the Dooms and Quakes of the world. But I think in the case of Diablo it works rather nicely. One of the outstanding differences between Diablo and other games of this genre is that Diablo is truly a Role Playing Game. You have a character that you need to bring up through the levels, until finally the character is strong enough to take on mighty Diablo himself. Through this process of going up levels, your define your characters traits and strengths, thus individualizing your self from the rest of the warriors, rogues, etc. One of the things that I would like to see in Diablo is the ability to pick how your character looks on the screen, this is especially important in network play because all of the characters of a given type look the same, at least until everybody starts to equipped differently..
All in all Diablo is a great game, every gamer should have it. It is one of those rare games, were the playability, and the story mix and match seamlessly, and the player is left with pure gaming satisfaction.
