Jack Nicklaus Golf has all of the features that you would expect to see in a contemporary golf simulation. It supports Multiplayer, you can play against the Golden Bear (Jack Nicklaus) himself, it has a complete course designer, and he courses you play were actually designed by Jack Nicklaus.
Creating a golfer is easy, and once you have created a player the system keeps track of all of your statistics, which is a nice feature. Game Play is straightforward, it does take a while to get used to the swinging mechanism. The key is to remember that it takes three clicks, the first click starts the swing, the second click sets the top of the apex (the strength), and the thrid click determines where the ball is hit. You putt with the same interface. Once you have mastered this interface, the rest of the game is straigthforward.
The look of the course is wonderful Accolade spent extra time creating a believable interface, with realistic (and beautiful) looking skies, including bird sounds, and the occasional "heckle" from Jack. The designers spent alot of time and put in alot of effort to build a very accurate simulation of golf.
But I think
that is its downfall, because when I play golf on
the computer, it is to be better than I am, and
to play at courses that are just to expensive to
play at. On the courses the game succeeds
wonderfully, they have done an excellent job of
creating a believable setting, and left in enough
environment that you feel as if you are there,
without compromising game play. However with
regards to the golf engine, I think that it
should be easier to play, and also easier to get
that "perfect shot". I once heard a
saying from a golfer friend of mine, that a
Professional Golfer remembers that one bad shot
in a 1000, and amateur golfer remembers that one
good shot in a 1000. The nice thing about a golf
simulation is that you should be able to get
those 999 beautiful shots. Jack Nicklaus 4 Golf
is a great simulation of the real game of golf.
