This game is very addicting, prepare to spend a very long time engrossed in the game, it really sucks you in. The graphics are a little lacking (but enjoyable nonetheless), the game play and the background music (ambiance) more than make up for it. You are really going to lose your friends and family over this one.
You start off with a castle, from that starting point you must build up that castle, train peasants, hire heroes, etc. Once you have built the castle up, and have hired a heroes, you can now start adventuring. Throughout the map of Enroth are resources (gold, gems, ore, etc), or other encounters. Like leprechauns who give you money, or kindly old monks and witches that are willing some of the tricks of the trade. In some cases however these treasures are guarded by monsters, which you must defeat to gain the treasure. Additionally as the game progresses you will probably run into other Player Characters, which you either must avoid or vanquish.
You must build your castle
up so that it will sufficiently protected when a
wandering hero, decides to attack it. And also
you must up
grade all of your base services, so
that you can build powerful armies to destroy the
other heroes.
Heroes can be either Knights, Sorceress, Wizard, Barbarian, Necromancer, or a Warlock. One of the nice features of the game is that each castle is themed, as are the monsters that are associated with the class. Your learns as you play, because they gain experience points, and learns new skills, and spells. Heroes also have can find and use artifacts. As cool as the heroes are they don't seem to do very much.
The combat engine is fairly
simplistic, but that is the way the game is
designed because the emphasis is on strategy. One
enhancement to the game would the
ability to resolve combat without any graphical
representation.
Heroes of Might and Magic II is a very fun game, it is nice combination of strategy and role playing. If you enjoy strategy games you are going to love Heroes II.
